ABOUT US

FOUNDED IN 2004 BY A GROUP OF TEACHERS FROM AFRICAN COUNTRIES REFERRED TO THE LEAP SCIENCE AND MATHS SCHOOL BY THE SCALABRINI CENTRE, A CAPE-TOWN-BASED, NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION WHICH HELPS REFUGEES INTEGRATE INTO THE SOUTH AFRICAN COMMUNITY AND ECONOMY.

Sammy Ntumba, the current Director of the Ithemba Lethu Learning Centre, was one of the first group of Learning Centre leaders where he has overseen the growth of the Centre to serve over 1 000 learners per year ranging from 12 to 18 years in Langa, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Crossroad, Philippi, Delft and Kalkfontein. In August 2015, the Ithemba Lethu Learning Centre (meaning “hope”) became a fully-fledged, free-standing initiative when the entity was registered as an independent, non-profit organization.

OUR MISSION

We strive to create and develop a replicable and sustainable model of successful, after-hours direct academic and psychosocial support for marginalized children in Cape Town and surrounding areas

Develop secondary school academic foundation through the provision of after-hours academic support focused on maths, science and technology

To identify, enroll, train and develop educated African refugees and foreign national citizens to teach South African students, thereby supporting their integration into the South African society and economy.

PRIMARY SCHOOL

This programme currently provides 3 hourly sessions per week for 30 to 35 weeks in a school year. It operates at 11 schools through the areas we operate and we focus on grades 6 and 7. We currently have 1 047 learners enrolled this year.

LIFE SKILLS PROGRAMME

To empower the youth in the communities we are providing different life skills to the youth as computer literacy, Multi Media (photography, video and editing), cooking, sewing and entrepreneurship. This programme is helping youth that did not finish their matric to learn the new skills in order to start their own businesses.
75% of students are able to find the job.
50 % of students are able to start their businesses.

HIGH SCHOOL

This programme currently provides weekly Saturday class (3 hours) in mathematics, physical science and life science for 30 to 35 weeks in a school year. It currently operates at the LEAP 1 campus in Langa where it serves 300 students from approximately 30 schools.

AFTER CARE PROGRAMME

We provides after care for learners from grade 4-12 in the safe place to help them to complete their unfinished class work, giving them extra lesson to increase their academy and help them to do their homework. This is happening at LEAP School in Langa St Francis from Monday to Thursday (15:00-17:00).
100% of students finish and complete their class work
100% of students finish their homework.
80% of students pass their subjects and classes
100% of students keep away from drugs, alcohols and street gangsters.

MATRIC REWRITING

This programme currently provides a full year programme for 45 students who have either failed matric or fail to gain a diploma or bachelor pass due to mathematics, mathematical literacy, physical science, life science and accounting.

LANGA COMPUTER FACILITY

 This programme currently provides 3 hourly sessions per week for 30 to 35 weeks in a school year. It operates in Zone 17,Langa. The Grade 7 students come to study maths specially using technology throughout some software as IXL and Khan Academic. 

80% of our students are able to use computer as tool in the different subjects that are learning specifically Maths and sciences.

80% students are able to do research, projects and homework using technology as tool.
